John Hitchcock, PhD, is an Associate Vice President for Education Studies with more than 20 years of experience in the design and conduct of rigorous research studies, research synthesis, and dissemination. He serves as a co-principal investigator for large-scale randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and as a co-project director for a research synthesis. He is the project director for the National Center for Education Evaluation’s (NCEE’s) Evaluating Programs and Strategies to Improve the Outcomes of Students with Disabilities; in this role he is directing the design of an impact evaluation of professional development for general and special education teachers. He is an expert in single-case design research, contributing to NCEE’s What Works Clearinghouse efforts to synthesize related evidence with RCTs and quasi-experiments. Hitchcock also serves as the principal investigator for the National Summer Learning and Enrichment Study, funded by the Wallace Foundation. This project entails conducting a national survey, an extensive set of interviews, and document analyses to understand summer programming across the U.S.
Previously, Hitchcock served as co-principal investigator on 3 large-scale RCTs to test the impacts of interventions designed to support children with special learning needs. He also served as a research director for a Regional Education Lab and as a director for 2 different university-based research centers. Hitchcock has written extensively about mixed-methods research designs, supported research efforts in several international settings, and he provides editorial support for 2 peer-reviewed journals.
